The MVP debate

Who’s it gonna be? David Ortiz or Alex Rodriguez?

Big Papi edges A-Rod in RBIs and hits with runners in scoring position. But A-Rod beats him in nearly every other category. You can also add the fact that his team won their division.

Granted RBIs and clutch hitting are pretty important stats. But in my opinion Ortiz doesn’t lead A-Rod enough to overshadow the fact A-Rod is an excellent defensive player, while Ortiz is just a DH.

That’s not to say I don’t think a DH can be MVP. But a DH has to be the overwhelming leader, and Ortiz is not.

So the bottom line – the AL MVP award should go to Alex Rodriguez!

Of course I would expect you to say that.........were the Red Sox to win it, I would argue the same thing. But I think that Mariano Rivera is more of an MVP for the Yanks than Rodriguez.......Or the combined arms of Chacon, Small, Wang - they, and their $1.2 million in salary saved your $200 million season........they are your true MVPs........

It's hard to argue with those points. But those guys aren't in the running.

Ortiz isn't a leader??? If there is any DH out there that deserves a MVP, it's Ortiz. His stats are there, his clutch hitting is there and he is a hugh leader in the clubhouse. Bottom line, if you took Ortiz away from the Sox, the Sox would not be in the playoffs. If you took A-rod away from the Yankees, the Yankees would still have a good shot of being in the playoffs. That to me shows that Ortiz is a more valuable play to his team then A-rod.

I meant his stats -- great though they are -- are not overwhelming compared to A-Rod's. Compared to other DH's, sure.

"Naturally, MVP elections are fraught with inaccuracies and hypocrisies. In the last 20 years, Vladimir Guerrero, Jason Giambi, Juan Gonzalez, Mo Vaughn, Frank Thomas and George Bell all have won the American League MVP - and all while ranking among the league leaders in errors at his position. In the National League, six of the last seven MVPs have been won by the defensively challenged Sammy Sosa, Jeff Kent and Barry Bonds, the latter of whom has seen an abrupt decline in his defensive skills in recent years.
You think Bonds has won four straight MVPs because he can field?
Please." - Tony Massarotti, Boston Herald

Yeah, it was Boston writer but he's right. Ortiz=MVP. Can't convince me otherwise. The Sox wouldn't be where the are without him. Period.

I think don't think Mariano Rivera should win the MVP. He didn't lead the league with saves for the first time in awhile. If he wins this year he should have also won every year since 1998. It would take 22 or 23 wins on a playoff team for a pitcher to win the MVP award. MVP award should go to an infileder (not 1st base) that bats at least .300 and also has a gold glove. I am not saying just A-Rod as I am sure other players fit that criteria.
