Passing it along

There is nothing better than sharing something you love with your kids and seeing them enjoy it too.

For Kris, this often comes when we go camping or spend time in the Adirondacks. She tries hard to instill an appreciation of the outdoors in the boys and loves seeing that pay off.

With me it often comes with more geeky pleasures.

Case in point -- last night I took Nolan to see "Raiders of the Lost Ark" at the Palace Theatre in Albany. He had seen the movie before, but I assured him that he had never seen it like this. I told him that there was something magical about sitting in a dark theater and watching the adventure play out on the giant screen. I told him that the picture might be scratchy or the sound not always crystal clear, but it would still be way better that watching a DVD in our basement.

I don't think he understood what I was talking about. But when the movie was over, he told me that I was right. He got it.

Another example -- it was a big weekend for "Doctor Who" fans. The latest (and some might argue greatest) actor to play the main character in the long running British sci-fi show left the series.

One of the things that has kept the show going since 1963 is a clever little plot device that allows different actors to come and go in the role. You see, the Doctor is an alien with the ability to regenerate -- essentially transform into a new body -- when he is dying.

Fans of the show always have a certain fondness for their first Doctor. For me it was Tom Baker, the fourth Doctor. For Nolan and Thomas it has been David Tennant, the 10th Doctor.

When I was a kid I was aware that there had been other actors who had played the Doctor. But still, seeing Tom Baker regenerate into the fifth Doctor blew my mind. And that was the case for my boys. There was much hoopla and hype leading up to Tennant's departure. When the moment of the big transformation finally came, they were literally on the edge of their seats. It was so cool to watch them enjoy that.

There are lots of things we try to pass on. Some things take better than others. It's always a thrill when you find you can share something you love.

'Raiders' returns

Some really exciting news was announced today..."Raiders of the Lost Ark" will be screened again at the Palace Theatre in Albany.

The Palace made the announcement this morning on their Twitter feed...
@PalaceAlbany 2009/2010 Classical Movie Series sneak preview: Raiders of the Lost Ark. More to come soon!

The last time I saw "Raiders" on the big screen was at the Palace three years ago. I said at the time, and I'll say it again, I'll take a scratchy 28-year-old print shown at a real theater with an audience over the crystal-clear DVDs in my basement any day.

They run some really great classic films there and it's great that my favorite flick of all time is getting a return engagement.

I hope I can bring Nolan with me this time. I had planned to wait a couple more years before letting Thomas watch the Indy movies, but now I might have to reconsider.

Indiana Jones and the Kick-Ass Game

I have never wanted a video game more in my life!

Building adventure

Without any new "Doctor Who" episodes to watch, Nolan's entertainment focus has shifted to two things -- Legos and Indiana Jones. He loves to bust out our great, big box of Lego parts (some of which are mine from back in the day) and build his own creations. And he recently watched all four Indy movies and declared them "better than Star Wars" (I couldn't be more proud).

So imagine his joy at combining the two.

He recently got "Lego Indiana Jones" for the Wii. He only gets 30 minutes a day to play during the week and an hour on weekends. The remainder of the time he spends talking about it. He's constantly filling me in on which level he just completed, which treasure he's found, which new character he's unlocked.

Today he spent some of his saved-up allowance on an actual Lego Indiana Jones kit -- recreating the motorcycle chase from "Last Crusade." He promptly put it all together on his own and was quite proud of it.

Not to be outdone, Thomas spent some of his money on a couple of packs of "Indiana Jones" trading cards. He has not seen the movies, but he's played the videogame and he gets excited about Indy becase he knows Nolan and I like him.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Indiana Jones and the First Facebook Review

I addded a version of my "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" review to the Indiana Jones Facebook page.

I had to edit it down quite a bit. Facebook kept rejecting it, saying it was too long. I guess I have a tendency to go on and on -- there was actually even more I could have said!

But I'm proud to say that mine appears to be the first review published on the official Indy Facebook page! Yay me!

The morning after

OK, some time has passed and I've formed some criticisms of "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (see my earlier review from last night).

My biggest nitpick is that Karen Allen, returning as Marion Ravenwood from "Raiders," is grossly underused. She and Indy have some worthwhile exchanges after she first shows up about halfway through the film. But then for the rest of the movie she has nothing to do but alternately stand around or run behind the other characters. There is a big action sequence about two-thirds through involving a chase through the jungle, culminating in a fist-fight between Indy and a big Soviet soldier while surrounded by a swarm of killer ants and then a tumble over a waterfall. From that point on, I'm not sure I can recall Marion having any significant dialogue in the rest of the movie. It's as if they needed her as the catalyst to introduce the Mutt character and then she wasn't needed anymore.

I was also expecting a little more from composer John Williams. His scores from the first three movies are etched in my memory. This time around he does a lot of recycling. Obviously we hear plenty of "The Raiders March" and some of the other themes from "Raiders" and "Last Crusade" are used again. That's fine. But there is nothing new that stands out in my mind. Nothing like the memorable music from the motorcycle chase in "Last Crusade" or the slave children music from "Temple of Doom."

There are a couple of other plot holes I'm wondering about, but I don't won't to get into them without giving too much away.

But for the most part, what I wrote last night still stands. I still loved it!

I'm a very happy Indiana Jones fan!

Remember back when I was saying that they should leave well enough alone and never make a fourth Indiana Jones movie? Yeah, what the hell was I thinking?

“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” lives up to the hype…every last bit of it. When I walked out of the theater I think I felt a little numb (in a good way). I just couldn’t believe that for the first time in 19 years I had watched a new Indy movie.

So what’s it all about? I’ll try to avoid spoilers. Shia LaBeouf plays a young man named Mutt who’s connected to two old friends of Indy (spoilers in invisotext: is one of those old friends Marion Ravenwood? Yes, he’s her son. Does that make him Indy’s son? It sure does.). One of those old friends disappeared and the other has been kidnapped. Mutt turns to Indy for help. The mystery leads them to South America first to search for a strange crystal skull and then deep into the Amazon jungle to find the ancient Mayan city the skull came from.

One of my first impressions when I walked out of the theater was that it was classic Spielberg. This is the kind of stuff he was doing 25-30 years ago. It’s in the spirit of “Close Encounters,” “E.T.,” “Amazing Stories” and, of course, “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Not just in terms of the story, but in the overall tone too. The opening scene shows teens out for a joyride in a hot rod jalopy, weaving in and out of an Army convoy and trying to get the lead car to drag race with them – with Elvis Pressley’s “Hound Dog” playing in the background. I can’t put my finger on it, but there was something about those opening moments that had this classic vibe to it – that I knew I was in for the kind of fun I hadn’t had watching a Spielberg movie since “Jurassic Park” (it also harkened a bit to George Lucas’ “American Grafitti”).

That brings me to another thing I loved about the movie – the era it was set in. The movie takes place in 1957, a good 20 years or so after the earlier movies. It completely embraces this setting and that’s great. Indy gets caught up in the Red Scare and has a near miss at an atomic testing site. The Nazis have been traded in for the Russians. At one point as Indy stares into the face of a KGB agent holding him at gunpoint (played by Cate Blanchett) he patriotically proclaims “I like Ike!”

There are references to the earlier movies – some subtle (he still has his students reading from the Michelson textbook) and some not so subtle (the passings of Marcus Brody and Henry Jones Sr. are noted – also the Ark of the Covenant does make an appearance, but it’s not central to the story). There is also a reference to one of the storylines from “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles” TV series.

And yet, despite these references, by embracing the 50s era, particularly in the first part of the movie, you get the impression that George Lucas isn’t just trying to reinvent the wheel. The character and the story are advancing. You know when a TV show you really like has been on for a long time and you go back and watch some of the earlier episodes and you realize how much its changed and evolved? That’s what’s going on here. Indy has evolved – we just didn’t get to see what’s happened between now and then. But if there had been a bunch of Indy movies over the last 19 years, I suspect this is where we would have ended up (we do get a little bit of back story – apparently “Col. Henry Jones” served in the OSS during World War II).

One last note on the storyline – as has been hinted in some of the interviews Lucas has given and as I alluded to earlier – the crystal skull is very different from the artifacts Indy chased after before. The earlier movies had him hunting down religious items. But this is something quite different. Once again, it’s very fitting for the 50s era and the B-movie sci-fi flicks of the day – much the same way the earlier movies paid homage to the Saturday matinee serials of the 1930s. I was braced for it because I had read up on the movie ahead of time (although I was careful to avoid major spoilers), but it might catch some moviegoers off guard.

So to sum up, I’ll make a bold statement: my judgment may be clouded because I just saw it, but if you asked me right now I’d tell you that “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” is the best of the sequels. Better than “Temple of Doom.” Better than “Last Crusade.” Will my opinion change once I come off my Indy Jones high? Perhaps. But that’s how I feel right now.

Now that I’ve seen the movie, it begs the question “Now what do I do with myself?” Unfortunately, unlike the earlier installments, I probably won’t ever see this one on the big screen again – because I’m old and I’m broke and I just don’t get the movies that often. So now I’ll count the days to the DVD release, because you can bet I want to see it again – several times again!

UPDATE: Here are some follow up thoughts...

Show time!

Tonight is the big night - I'll be attending an early screening of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!"

Once I've had time to digest it and compose my thoughts, I'll provide a review. I'm trying hard to keep an open mind. As many of you know, I was skeptical of the idea of a fourth Indy movie for a long time. But, as predicted, I got more and more excited as the movie approached.

Last week Kris warned me that there is a good chance I'll be disappointed, seeing as how I've built this movie up so much.

She also made this comment last night: "I can't wait until you see this friggin' movie so I can stop hearing about it."

Perhaps I've allowed my enthusiasm to get the better of me. Either way, I'm very excited for tonight!

Raiders of the Lost Cereal

Kris and the kids went grocery shopping yesterday. When I got home from work the boys were very excited to tell me about the cereal they picked out -- since it had Indiana Jones on the box (or "Indian Jones" as Thomas often calls him)!

Thomas even said I could keep the toy inside all for myself.

Unfortunately, there is no toy inside. You need four proofs of purchase to send away for the "Indiana Jones search light." Oh well. It's the thought that counts!

At last! The full Indy trailer!

Remember that "Indiana Jones" TV spot I posted yesterday? Forget about it. This is better.

I suppose my biggest disappointment about "Iron Man" was that I thought for sure there would be a new "Indiana Jones" trailer attached to the front of it (they're both being released by Paramount).

Alas, there was no new Indy trailer on the big screen last night, but there is one on the Internet today. It's pretty poor quality -- obviously a bootleg. But it's cool nonetheless. I'm sure there will be an official version coming in the next the few days...

The Indy countdown continues

As I look forward to attending a sneak preview of "Iron Man" tonight, I thought I'd pass along this new "Indiana Jones" TV spot that I just saw for the first time. It offers a few glimpses at some new material we haven't seen before.

Way cool!

At the movies

As promised, here is a list of the Summer 2008 movies I’m most looking forward to seeing.

Realize that I’ll probably actually get to see very few of these, and those I do see will likely be on DVD, VOD or regular old TV. Heck, I still haven’t seen all of the movies from last year that I wanted to see!

Anyway, here we go…

“Iron Man” (May 2) – I’ve written a lot about this movie already here on the blog. As I’ve said before, in my comic book collecting days I was never a big Iron Man fan per se. But I was a huge Marvel Comics fan, and Iron Man is a major player in the Marvel Universe. It looks like they’ve done a great job with this movie and I’m very anxious to see it.
“Speed Racer” (May 9) – I wasn’t a huge fan of the cartoon, but I do remember watching it a few times as a youngster and I appreciate it for it’s pop culture status and the role it played in introducing Japanese anime to the United States. Plus, it looks cool and the kids are dying to see it. I’m pleased to see Hollywood actually releasing a live action PG movie that it looks like kids and adults can both enjoy. As a parent, I’m still peeved that “Transformers” was PG-13.
“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (May 22) – ‘Nuff said. This one is the big enchilada. My must-see movie event of the year (or should that be decade?).
“The Incredible Hulk” (June 13) – Up until recently, there hasn’t been nearly as much written about this movie compared to “Iron Man” and I don’t think I’ve even mentioned it here yet. There was a trailer released a few weeks ago and I really wasn’t sure what to make of it. Parts of it seemed good, but the CGI looked a little goofy. But there is a lot about this movie that I find intriguing – mainly the notion of it essentially being a “do-over” after 2003’s disappointing “Hulk” movie. And as mentioned, I’m a Marvel fan so it’s my duty to want to see any Marvel movie.
“Get Smart” (June 20) – I loved the old TV show. The new movie has a great cast (Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin, The Rock). Let’s hope they don’t screw it up.
“Wall-E” (June 27) – I’ve never seen a Pixar movie I didn’t like. They’re always fun for the whole family.
“The Dark Knight” (July 18) – I didn’t see “Batman Begins” until long after it was released on DVD, but I thought it was fantastic. I’m a Tim Burton fan, but this was better than his take on Batman. It’s become one of those movies I have to stop and watch whenever I stumble upon it while flipping channels. I can’t wait to see the next installment.
“The X-Files: I Want to Believe” (July 25) – I’m not sure if they can pull it off, but I hope this movie is great if only so it can erase the bad taste the last episode (make that the last several episodes) left in my mouth.

Looking a little further down the road, here are some movies from later in 2008 that are also on my want to see list…

“Quantum of Solace” (Nov. 7) – See what I wrote above for “The Dark Knight” and substitute “James Bond” for “Batman.” I actually enojyed the Pierce Brosnan movies for the most part, but there is no disputing “Casino Royale” was the best Bond flick in ages.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (Nov. 21) – We just got around to watching “Order of the Phoenix” last week, which was decent, although not my favorite Harry Potter movie. “Half-Blood Prince” was one of the most important books in the series, but arguably had the least action. Still, I’m really anxious to see how it translates to the screen.

IndyFest rides again?

Since the release of the "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" trailer back in February, a few people have asked me if there would be another IndyFest. I honestly had not planned on it, but since it's come up a few times, should I consider it?

I don't think there will be another IndyFest (as if there ever could be) for a variety of reasons. But it's nice to know that people still have fond memories of it 19 years later.

I dug this picture up in a photo album at mom's house a few weeks ago. Don't see yourself? Check out the other pictures I uploaded to Facebook.

Crystal Skullalicious

It's a busy news day here in Albany. But there is always time to post something like this!

Check out this beautiful poster from the great Drew Struzan...

'What are you supposed to be? Some kind of lion tamer?'

Check out this cool piece of swag I picked up today. This was sent to a good friend of mine who passed it along.

Now I've got the whip. I still have my old fedora. Unfortunately, my leather jacket wore out a long time ago. I just need to get a new one -- and a revolver -- and I'll have all I need for my next archeology expedition!

Indiana Jones and the Mystery of the Disappearing Guns

A very interesting observation has been made about that Indiana Jones trailer we all went bonkers over yesterday.

Remember all of those heavily-armed soldiers seen surrounding a car and throwing Indy to the ground about a minute into the trailer? It didn’t dawn on me any of the 63 times I watched the trailer before now, but when we see Indy in that first shot where he and Ray Winstone have their hands up…um…where did all the guns go?

It appears they’ve all been scrubbed out of the shot through the magic of CGI. As you can see in the image above, they’re still in the trailer’s international version – which you can watch for yourself right here.

Moriarty at AICN theorizes the guns pointed at our hero were removed at the insistence of the MPAA. Keep in mind, the trailer debuted on the big screen in front of the PG-rated “Spiderwick Chronicles.”

First of all, I’m not convinced removing the guns was necessary. If it was, would it have been too hard to provide one version on the Internet – for fans like me who seek the trailer out – and another to show with a PG movie so the kiddies won’t be scarred for life at the sight of a firearm?

A little history: remember, the PG-13 rating was created primarily because of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” in 1984. Some thought the whipping of children and ripping a heart out of someone’s chest was a little too intense.

Also worth noting: there is one other difference between the American trailer and the one the rest of the world is apparently seeing. After a montage of clips from the old films, the first new piece of footage we see in the trailer is an American flag. You’ll note that Old Glory is conspicuously absent in the international version.

TOO DAMN COOL!!!

Unless you attended Indyfest '89, you have no idea how giddy with excitement I was this morning when I first saw this! On May 22 I am so there!

Check it out in glorious HD here...

Valentine for Indy fans

Tomorrow is the big day!

Well, not the big day. That will be May 22 when "Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" hits theaters.

But tomorrow is when we get our first glimpse of the movie with the release of the trailer.

Stay close to the TV tomorrow morning. The trailer will debut during the 8 to 9 a.m. hour of Good Morning America. It will be on IndianaJones.com and in movie theaters everywhere after that.

And if I can find an embeddable version, you can be sure it will be here as well.

In the meantime, feast your eyes on this beautiful artwork. According to AICN, this is a cover for an upcoming comic book adaptation of the movie.

In the top man's office

Here's yet another new "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" picture. I saw this in USA Today last week. That was a small black & white photo. But now there is a nice big color version on the MTV Movies Blog.

Is this in the warehouse I think it is?

UPDATE: I've replaced the image with an even better version straight from IndianaJones.com.
