In response to Aaron's "no worries here" comment (and at the risk of setting off a firestorm of more comments) here are some choice excerpts from Dan Shaughnessy's column in this morning's Boston Globe, which echo similar sentiments from Erik Kuselias and Buster Olney on ESPN Radio...
No way around this one. Johnny Damon is a Yankee and it looks like the Red Sox don't know what they are doing. Time for Ben Cherington and Jed Hoyer to say hello to Lou Gorman and Dan Duquette.
And also...
So now your Boston Red Sox have no center fielder, no shortstop, and no first baseman to go along with no Theo Epstein and no clue. It's fair to say this is becoming a winter of discontent in Red Sox Nation. Ben and Jed and Craig and Larry and Tom and John and Crosby, Stills & Nash can spin this anyway they want, but Sox fans can't escape the conclusion that there's chaos at the top. The Josh Beckett trade bought some goodwill and glad tidings, but losing Damon to the Yankees is a devastating blow to the foundation of the Nation.
And he saved the best part for last...
Bottom line: The Yankees just got better and more interesting, and the Red Sox just got worse and more boring. And a Nation is certain to wonder if this would have happened if Theo were still on the job.

Well, he is right to a point. But Dan's sole purpose in life is to
A). Make Sox player's lives living he-double-hockey-sticks (does the Blog censor?)
B). Make good copy for the Globe (and therefore money for himself) and
C). Cause as much tension, angst and general mass hysteria as he possibly can (see Theo debacle where Dan's column was the center of the firestorm)
Dan is an a-hole. Quote Peter Gammons instead and I will happily engage in debate.

Oh yeah...the Boston Globe...Their motto is "You must be a doomer and believe in the curse to work here". As for Erik Kuselias, he doesn’t know who to root for. One day he sounds like a Yankee fan, the next day he sounds like a sox fan. This doesn’t surprise me about him because he is a blood sucking lawyer...Typical. I'm not worried!!! We'll talk more when the Sox sign Jones and we can compare age and stats to your rock star.
What about Buster Olney. He's far from a Yankee-lover. He wrote "The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty." He agreed that with this move the Red Sox are having the worst off season in the majors.
Don't care about him...I just read his article on ESPN Magazine. He says it's a HUGH mistake not to sign him. I don't see that at all. There are plenty of guys who will become free agents next year. To name a few, you have Torii Hunter from the Twins and Andruw Jones. Both of these guys are MUCH better all around players then the Rock Star.
By the way, the Yankee fans here at work are quieter then the day after the Sox won the 2004 ALCS...They hate this deal. They all thought (like me) that the Yankees weren’t interested in him and just trying to jack up his price. Boy are they pissed. No, I'm not worried
Gotta disagree...Buster Olney is a respected baseball commentator. He usually has some very accurate perspectives.
Erik Kasilius is a blowhard. A Sox fan, but a blowhard. He was more interesting when his brother was still with him. He's the reason that I didn't tune into Mike and Mike this morning and TOTALLY missed this story altogether! I had to hear it from Yankee fans at work!
Time to go break the news to my daughter and take away her Damon shirt.
