I'm impressed with the video camera on my iPod Nano.
Over the weekend while Thomas was playing in the front yard I decided to pull my iPod out of my pocket and play with the camera since I had never really used it before.
The tiny microphone doesn't pick Thomas up very well, but you can hear my voice just fine. The camera lense is also in kind of an awkward spot -- right where it would feel most natural to place your hand while holding the iPod.
Other than those nitpicks, the video looks pretty good considering it came from such a small device.
The one I'm surprised wasn't on it was "JK Wedding Entrance Dance." We discovered today that someone here at work was the one person in America who hadn't seen it yet. So after she watched it with the sound cranked up, we've all had the song stuck in our head! (Maybe that's why I have a headache right now)
Also conspicuously absent was Herb Brooks' pregame speech as performed by 4-year-old Rizzo...
By posting this video, it is not my intention to knock Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, although I'm sure some will take it that way. I just think it’s kind of funny – and would be no matter who was giving the interview.
Here’s the deal –the governor of Alaska gets to traditionally pardon a turkey each year before Thanksgiving just as the president famously does.
This year, after ceremoniously giving one bird a new lease on life at a turkey farm in her hometown of Wasilla, Palin proceeded to grant an interview to KTUU-TV.
However, as she was speaking a farm worker can clearly be seen slaughtering birds in the background. Turkeys can be seen twitching through their final moments as the governor talks about everything from the Alaskan state budget to her Thanksgiving plans with her family.
At least I think that’s what she was saying. After a while you stop listening to her just watch the farm guy in the background and wonder, “Doesn’t anybody realize what’s going on in this shot?”
Apparently someone did. KTUU says the photographer did alert the governor, but she didn’t really care. After all, she is a hunter.
How many of us have joked that if we just find some way to harness the seemingly boundless energy of our kids then we would solve our nation's energy crisis?
If you're like me, you loved Joss Whedon's fantastic musical "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" when it was streamed online last week, but are too cheap to download it at iTunes.
The plan was that Whedon's mini-movie made outside the Hollywood studio system was going to be steamed for free for only a limited time. Then you'd have to get it at iTunes or wait for the eventual DVD release.
But wait no more! "Dr. Horrible" is the latest release as part of the Hulu Days of Summer. Now you can watch it over and over and memorize all the songs to your heart's content...
I'm jealous of Nolan because he's going to get to see "Speed Racer" today. He's going after school with some of his friends.
In the meantime, I'll just have to settle for the first seven minutes, which are now available online...
If this is any indication, he is going to love this movie! I'll see if I can get him to provide a review later tonight.
As for me, I shouldn't feel too bad. Sitting on my desk in front of me right now are two passes to an early screening of "Indiana Jones" on May 19!
UPDATE: I had hoped I could show the kids some of the original "Speed Racer" cartoons, but they're not on TV anymore. But there's good news! Who needs TV? "Speed Racer" is now available on Hulu.
I had a crazy-busy week last week, but it was all well worth it.
It started with attending a pizza party to mark the end of Nolan’s basketball clinic. The coach called each kid up one-by-one and presented them with a T-shirt. Nolan really enjoyed it the clinic and looked pretty pleased to shake the coach’s hand and accept his shirt.
I didn’t mention before that he won a foul shot contest a few weeks ago when he sank seven out of 15 shots – more than any other second grader. He’s got another trophy on his shelf now to show for his efforts.
I was up late most nights last week editing Cub Scout videos. The first was for a report on the Cub Scouts that Nolan had to give in class (see below). I think he recruited some new members in the process. The second was the end-of-the-year video for the Pack that was shown at Sunday’s Blue & Gold Dinner (Nolan was awarded his Wolf badge and officially became a Bear).

The Blue & Gold was on Sunday. But on Saturday, I attended a dinner in Albany for alumni of the communication department at SUNY Plattsburgh (see photo above). It was great to see old friends and some old professors – although I was the sole representative of the Class of 1994. We had a good time and I hope this becomes an annual event. I've uploaded more photos from the dinner to Facebook.
As much as I've been carrying on about "Indiana Jones," "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight," the movie Nolan is really anxious to see is "Speed Racer."
He's never seen the old cartoon and knew next to nothing about the show. But once he saw the trailer, he was hooked. He thought it looked like his "Hot Wheels" video game brought to life (and I admit, it's on my want-to-see list too).
This past week there was a book fair at his school and he was quite excited to buy a "Speed Racer" book.
So far I've resisted the temptation to tell him who Racer X is. Why spoil the surprise? He'll enjoy discovering that on his own.
